  1. Two parallel chords of a circle of diameter 20 cm are 12 cm and 16 cm long. If the chords are in the same side of the centre, then the distance between them is
    1. 28 cm
    2. 2 cm
    3. 4 cm
    4. 8 cm
Correct Option: B

According to question , we draw a figure of a circle with centre O and in which two parallel chords are AB and CD ,

OA = OC = radius = 10 cm
AB = 16 cm
CD = 12 cm
In ∆ OAE,
∠OEA = 90°
∴ AE = EB = 8 cm
∴ OE = √OA² - AE²
OE = √10² - 8² = √100 - 64
OE = √36 = 6 cm
In ∆ OFC,
∠OFC = 90°
∴ CF = FD = 6 cm
∴ OF = √OC² - OF²
OF = √10² -6²
OF = √100 - 36
OF = √64 = 8 cm
∴ Required distance = EF = OF – OE
Required distance = 8 – 6 = 2 cm
