  1. If 1 < x < 2, then the value of √(x − 1)2 + √(x − 3)2 is
    1. 1
    2. 2
    3. 3
    4. 2x–4
Correct Option: B

Since 1 < x < 2, we have
x – 1 > 0 and
x – 3 < 0
or, 3 – x > 0
∴  √(x − 1)2 + √(x − 3)2
= √(x − 1)2 + √(3 − x)2
[∴  (x − 3)2 = (3 – x)2]
= x – 1 + 3 – x = 2
