  1. If   x =
    3 + 1
      and y =
    3 − 1
      , then value of x2 + y2 is :
    3 − 13 + 1
    1. 14
    2. 13
    3. 15
    4. 10
Correct Option: A

x =
3 + 1
3 − 1

=
3 + 1
×
(√3 + 1)
3 − 1(√3 + 1)

=
(√3 + 1)2
=
3 + 1 + 2√3
3 − 12

=
4 + 2√3
= 2 + √3
2

Similarly,
y =
3 − 1
= 2 − √3
3 + 1

∴  x2 + y2 = (2 + √3)2 + (2 − √3)2
= 4 + 3 + 4√3 + 4 + 3 – 4√3
= 14
