  1. A reduction of 20% in the price of sugar enables a housewife to purchase 6 kg more for Rs. 240. What is the original price per kg of sugar ?
    1. Rs. 10 per kg
    2. Rs. 8 per kg
    3. Rs. 6 per kg
    4. Rs. 5 per kg
Correct Option: A

Reduction in price = 20% ( 1 / 5 )
Increase in amount = 25 % (1 / 4) = 6 kg

It means original amount of sugar needed = 6 X 4 =24 kg
∴ Original price of the sugar = 240 / 24
= Rs. 10 per kg

Let's assume the original price for sugar is P rupees/kg.
So after a 20% decrease in price the rate per kg sugar will be P - 20 % of P
    = P - (P/5) = 4x/5

    Now from the question,
    {240/(4P/5)} - (240/P) = 6
    ⇒ 300/p - 240/p = 6
    ⇒ (300 - 240)/P = 6
    ⇒ P = 10 rupees per kg.
