  1. Two numbers are in the ratio of 3 : 5. If 9 be subtracted from each, then they are in the ratio of 12 : 23. Find the numbers.
    1. 15, 28
    2. 36, 115
    3. 33, 55
    4. 60, 69
Correct Option: C

According to the question,

3x − 9
=
12
5x − 923

(Numbers = 3x and 5x )
⇒  69x – 207 = 60x – 108
⇒  9x = 207 – 108 = 99
⇒  x = 11
∴  Required numbers ⇒ 3 × 11
= 33 and 5 × 11 = 55
Second Method :
Here, a = 3, b = 5, c = 12, d = 23, x = 9
1st Number =
xa(d − c)
ad − bc

=
9 × 3(23 − 12)
3 × 23 − 5 × 12

=
27 × 11
69 − 60

=
27 × 11
= 33
9

2nd Number =
xb(d − c)
ad − bc

=
9 × 5(23 − 12)
3 × 23 − 5 × 12

=
45 × 11
69 − 60

=
45 × 11
= 55
9

Numbers are 33, 55
