  1. The sum of four numbers is 48. When 5 and 1 are added to the first two; and 3 and 7 are subtracted from the 3rd and 4th, the numbers will be equal. The numbers are
    1. 9, 7, 15, 17
    2. 4, 12, 12, 20
    3. 5, 11, 13, 19
    4. 6, 10, 14, 18
Correct Option: D

Let four numbers be a, b, c and d respectively.
∴ a + b + c + d = 48    ......(i)
and,
a + 5 = b + 1 = c – 3 = d – 7 = p (let)
∴  a = p – 5; b = p – 1,
c = p + 3, d = p + 7
From equation (i),
p – 5 + p – 1 + p + 3 + p + 7 = 48
⇒  4p + 4 = 48
⇒  4p = 48 – 4 = 44

⇒  p =
44
= 11
4

⇒  a = p – 5 = 11 – 5 = 6
b = p – 1 = 11 – 1 = 10
c = p + 3 = 11 + 3 = 14
d = p + 7 = 11 + 7 = 18
Therefore , The numbers are 6, 10, 14 and 18 .
