Article :-

Article is a type of adjective which is used in a sentence to make a noun definite or indefinite.
It is of two types

(1) Definite Article (The) - Definite article used with definite noun. It is used with singular and plural. It is used with both countable and uncountable noun.
(2) Indefinite Article (A/An) - Indefinite article used with indefinite noun.

Use of Definite Article - "The"

Rule-1- Before superlative adjective definite article 'the' is used.
Ex- He is a tallest boy in the class. ( Incorrect )
He is the tallest boy in the class. ( correct )

Note- Unique is such a superlative adjective before which always comes article 'a' not 'the'.
Ex- He is the unique boy in the class. ( Incorrect )
He is a unique boy in the class. ( correct )

Rule-2- If in the sentences their is possessive adjective then their
any article is not used.
Possessive adjective - my, our, your, his, her, their, its etc.
Ex- He is my best friend.

Rule-3- Before comparative adjective, if the number is of 'two' without 'than' used definite article 'the.
Ex- He is the better than the two boys. ( Incorrect )
He is the better of the three boys. ( Incorrect )
He is the better of two boys. ( Correct )

Rule-4- Before complementary comparison definite article 'the' is used.
Ex- The higher you go, The cooler you feel.
The more you read, The more you learn.

Rule-5- Before positive adjective if it is used as noun, definite article 'the' is used.
Ex- The rich are happy.

Rule-6- Before adjectival names definite article 'the' is used.
Ex- My friend has returned from the U.K.

Rule-7- When a name is used as adjective then definite article 'the' is used before the name.
Ex- Kalidas was the shakeshpeare of India.

Rule-8- Before geographical names definite article 'the' is used.
Ex- The Punjab is a rich state.

Rule-9- Before a definite name article the is used.
Ex- Mohan is a good boy.
The mohan of of Vijay Nagar is a good boy.

Rule-10- Definite article the is used before surname in the presence of name.
Ex- Mr. R.k. Thakur teaches us English, the thakur is a good teacher.

Rule-11- Definite article the is used before the name of musical instruments.
Ex- I know how to play on the tabla.

Rule-13- Definite article the is used before common noun used as abstract noun.
Ex- The mother in her is dead.

Rule-14- Definite article the is used before the name of natural objects.
For example- The sum, The Moon, The earth, The sky etc.
Ex-The sun sets in the west.
The earth revolves round the sum.

Rule-15- Definite article the is used before the scientific objects.
Ex- The computer, The telephone, The T.V, The mobile etc.

Rule-16- Definite article the is used before the name of directions.
Ex- The East, The West, The North, The south.

Rule-17- Definite article the is used before the name of news papers.
Ex- The Hindu, The times of India

Rule-18- Definite article the is used before ordinal number.
Ex- The first, The second, The third, The four, The former, The second, The last etc.

Rule-19- Definite article the is used before religious book.
Ex- The Ramayana, The Gita, The Hindu, The Muslim etc.

Rule-20- Definite article the is used before the name of historical monuments and incidents.
Ex- The Tajmahal, The Red fort,
The Jaliyawala Scarnage

Rule-21- Definite article the is used before the name of sea, ocean, gulf, deserts, plains, river, mountain, island etc.
Ex- The Red sea, The Indian ocean
The Sahara desert.
The gulf of mexico.
The Ganga.

Use of Indefinite Article- A/An

Rule-1- Indefinite article 'a' is used before consonant sound. and 'an' is used before vowel sound.
Ex- He is a European
He is an honest man.

Rule-2- Indefinite article a/an is used before singular countable noun.
Ex- This is water. ( No article used )
This is a watermelon. ( article a is used )
There are watermelon. ( No article used )

Rule-3- Indefinite article a/an used before the name of unknown person.
Ex- A Ramesh has come to meet you whom i don't know.

Rule-4- Article A/An is used before habits.
Ex- As usual he has gone for a walk.

Rule-5- Article a/an is used before common noun.
Ex- A cow is a useful animal.

Rule-6- Article a/an is used before units to show rate.
Ex- Rice sells 50 RS a kilo.

Rule-7- Article a/an is used in some phrases.
Ex- He was in a hurry to go.

Omission of Article

Rule-1- No article is used before the name of institution its purpose, but 'the' is used out of purpose.
Ex- I am going to college to teach the students.
I am going to the college to meet him.

Rule-2- No article is used before self home, house and relation. But 'the' is used before others.
Ex- Father is coming tomorrow.
The father of Ramesh's is coming tomorrow.

Rule-3- No article is used before God, but 'the' is used before god.
Ex- God is everywhere.
The god is everywhere.

Rule-4- No article is used before material and abstract noun in general but 'the' is used before particular.
Ex- Gold is a precious metal.
The gold of this ring is pure.
Beauty is a thing of joy forever.
The beauty of Kashmir is very attractive.

Rule-5- No article is used before the name of seasons but 'the' is used if seasons its self come after the name.
Ex- I like winter season very much.
I like the winter very much.

Rule-6- No article is used before the name of language but 'the is used in the meaning of its people.
Ex- I know English language well.
I know the English well.

Rule-7- No article is used before system of food in general but 'the' is used before occasional system of food.
Ex- He invited me to dimmer.
He invited me to the dinner of his marriage.

Rule-8- No article is used before the name of game. But 'the' is used in the meaning of its technique.
Ex- I like cricket very much.
I like the cricket of Dhoni very much.

Rule-9- If any noun comes after such words like elect, make, appoint, introduce then no article is used.
Ex- He was elected MLA.
We made him monitor.
We elected his president.

Rule-10- No article is used after kind of, type of, sort of but article 'a/an' is used in exclamatory sentence.
Ex- I like this type off dress.
Such type of a dress he wears!

Rule-11- No article is used before the name of 'disease'.
Ex- Ram is suffering from fever.
She died of cholera.

Rule-12- If a plural noun represent any class then no article is used before plural noun.
Ex- Teachers are generally hard workers.

Rule-13- No article is used with work.
Ex- He is at work.
Ram is on his way to work.
