After Indian independence in 1947, Sikkim which was an Indian princely state became a 'protectorate' of India. However, in 1974, Sikkim expressed its desire to become a part of India.
A referendum was held in 1975, for Sikkim to become an integral part of India. Thus, Sikkim became a full-fledged state of India in 1975.

Arunachal Pradesh was a union territory of India since 1972. It became a full-fledged state of India in 1987.

Chhattisgarh was formed on 1st November 2000 by partitioning 10 Chhattisgarhi and 6 Gondi speaking districts of Madhya Pradesh.

Jharkhand was formed on 15th November 2000 carving the tribal rich regions of South Bihar.
