The first Formula One Grand Prix was held at the circuit on 30 October 2011. The inaugural race was won by Germany’s Sebastian Vettel, his 11th victory of the season. He also took the fastest lap of the race on his last lap. Jenson Button finished in second place for McLaren, and Fernando Alonso completed the podium for Ferrari, in third position. Sachin Tendulkar waved the chequered flag to end the race. The only Indian driver, Narain Karthikeyan of HRT F1, finished in 17th position.
