ADB has assisted the transport sector of India since the start of its operations there in 1987. The first ADB loan (US dollar 177 million) provided for development of national highways in three States, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh and state highways in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The second ADB loan (US dollar 250 million) provides for improvement in Karnataka, Kerala, Rajasthan and of state roads in Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.
