India is the second largest producer of silk (after China) in the world and has the distinction of manufacturing four varieties namely, mulberry, eri, tasar and much silks. Karnataka accounts for 55.65 per cent of the silk yarn production of the country followed by Madhya Pradesh (40.48%), Tamil Nadu (2.42%) and Punjab (1.45%).
