Janaki Ammal was appointed Officer on Special Duty on 14 October, 1952.The reorganisation plan was finally approved by the Government of India on 29 March 1954 , with Calcutta as the headquarters of Botanical Survey of India. Simultaneously, a Central Botanical Laboratory at Lucknow was established in December, 1957 for studying the various aspects of plant biology like – cytology, plant physiology, plant chemistry, seed biology, ecology, etc.- in order to provide multidisciplinary approach to conventional taxonomy.
