The portion of a continent that is submerged under an area of relatively shallow water is known as 'continental shelf' and the shallow water is referred to as 'shelf sea'.

The Red Sea was formed due to a split between Arabian and African tectonic plates. Hence, it has wide continental shelves on both of its coasts.

The North Sea is a relatively open body of water situated in North-West Europe.

The Arabian Sea is an extension of the Indian Ocean into the Indian subcontinent.

The Mediterranean Sea is believed to be the remnant of prehistoric 'Tethys Sea' and is believed to be closing down due to the movement of tectonic plates.
