Due to the sun being at the focus of the elliptic orbit, different areas receive different amounts of insolation. This causes season cycles in the hemispheres. When the orbit becomes circular, the focus would become the center of the circle. Now if the Sun is at the center of such an orbit, the variations among seasons will be much lesser as they will receive equal amounts of insolation throughout the year.
