A partial eclipse occurs when the Sun and Moon are not exactly in line with the Earth and the Moon only partially obscures the Sun. A total eclipse occurs when the Sun and Moon are exactly in line with the Earth and the Moon covers the entire disk of the Sun. An annular eclipse occurs when the Moon is farther away in its orbit than usual and appears too small to completely cover the Sun’s disk. During such an event, a bright ring of sunlight shines around the Moon.
