The full form of TLC is Total Lung Capacity. It is a maximum amount of air contained in the lung after full inspiration. The average lung capacity of a healthy adult is 6 liters of air. TLC is the total value of tidal volume, expiratory reserve volume, residual volume, inspiratory reserve volume.
Tidal volume(TV) It measures the total amount of air that is inhaled and exhaled during a normal breath. The average volume is 500ml of air.
Expiratory Reserve Volume(ERV) The additional amount of air that can breathe out after normal breathing. The average volume is 1100 mL in males and 800 mL in females.
Residual Volume(RV) The amount of air left after exhalation process. 1 to 1.2L is normal residual volume.
Inspiratory Reserve Volume(IRV)The additional amount of air that can breathe in after normal breathing. The average volume is 3000 mL in males and 2100 mL in females.
Formula to calculate total lung capacity
Total lung capacity=RV+ERV+TV+IRV
