What is the full form of PKD?

The full form of PKD is Polycystic Kidney Disease. It is a genetic disorder in which clusters of cysts develop in the kidneys. It is a noncancerous cyst contains water like fluid which increases kidney size and affects kidney function and leads to kidney failure.
Types of PKD
There are two types of Polycystic Kidney Disease:
Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD)- In this, if one parent has PKD, there is a 50% chance that a child can also be getting this disease. It usually occurs at the age of 30 and 40.
Autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD)- In this, if both the parents are carriers of the gene that causes PKD then the child may be born with PKD. It affects 1 in 20,000 children.
Symptoms
High blood pressure
Enlarged kidneys
Blood in the urine
Pain in the abdomen
Fatigue
Swollen abdomen
Diagnosis
Polycystic Kidney Disease diagnosed by CT scan abdomen MRI Abdomen, Ultrasound.
Treatment
1. Medicine to control blood pressure
2. Pain killer and antibiotics for cyst
3. Cyst removal
4. Dialysis
5. In some case, Kidney transplant is required
Prevenation
1. Control Blood pressure, take B.P medication as prescribed by the doctor
2. Eat low salt food like fruits, whole grains, etc
3. Quit smoking and alcohol
4. Drink plenty of water
5. Maintain a healthy weight
6. Exercise
