  1. The full form of ED is Enforcement Directorate. It is a law enforcement agency and economic intelligence agency that is responsible for enforcing economic laws and handle economic crime in India. It was established in 1956 and headquartered in New Delhi.

    ED is part of the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, Government Of India. The team of Enforcement Directorate consists officer from Indian Corporate Law Service, Indian administrative services, Indian police services, and Indian Revenue Service.

    Objective


    The primary objective of Enforcement Directorate is the enforcement of the Foreign Exchange Management Act 1999 and the Prevention of Money Laundering Act 2002.

    Organization setup


    The Enforcement directorate office is Headquartered at New Delhi and it is headed by Sanjay Kumar Mishra IRS, Director Enforcement. It has five regional offices at Mumbai, Chennai, Chandigarh, Kolkata, and Delhi which is headed by Special Directors of Enforcement.

    ED has a total of 16 zonal offices in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kochi, Delhi, Panaji, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jalandhar, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Patna, and Srinagar headed by a Joint Director.

    Sub-Zonal Offices at Jaipur, Jalandhar, Srinagar, Varanasi, Guwahati, Calicut, Indore, Nagpur, Dehradun, Surat, Patna, Bhubaneshwar, Shimla, Vishakhapatnam, Jammu, Ranchi, Raipur and Madurai which are headed by a Deputy Director.

    Functions of the Enforcement Directorate


    1. Investigate the suspected violations under the provisions of Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999(FEMA) Contradictions of FEMA are managed by the method of arbitration by assigned specialists of ED and punishments up to three times the entirety included can be forced.

    2. Investigate money laundering case under the provisions of Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002(PMLA)

    3. Take actions like search, arrest, execution and survey against the culprit of PMLA offence.

    4. Support instances of preventive detainment under Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act, 1974(COFEPOSA) as to negations of FEMA.

    5. Provide help and support to foreign countries in case of money laundering and restitution of assets under the provisions of PMLA
