  1. The full form of WMO is a specialized department of the United Nations responsible for assist international cooperation on atmospheric science, climatology, hydrology and geophysics. WMO is founded in 23 march 1950 and headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. The WMO made up with 193 nations and territories and facilitates the free and unrestricted exchange of information, data & research with the respective members of meteorological & hydrological institutions.

    The WMO is controlled by the World Meteorological Congress, composed of member states, it is headed by an Executive Council controlled by the President, presently Gerhard Adrian of Germany. World meteorological congress members meet in every four years to make policies and goals.

    History of WMO


    1. The WMO began from the International Meteorological Organization, a non-governmental association established in 1873 as a gathering for weather data and research. WMO also has collaboration with the nongovernmental organization and other international organizations to solve the issue related to environmental protection, climate change, resource manager, and socioeconomic development.

    2. The World Meteorological Convention of 1947, that at first proposed the World Meteorological Organization brought about the plan to change the status and function of the IMO.

    3. The Convention came into power on March 23, 1950, and the former year WMO began activity inside the UN framework as an intergovernmental association.

    Hierarchy In WMO


    1. The World Meteorological Congress, the top body of the Organization, each member state and territory is represented by a Permanent Representative with WMO

    2. World Meteorological Congress select the President and Vice-Presidents and members of the Executive Council and the Secretary-General.

    3. The Secretariat is an eight-division association with a staff of 200 headed by a Secretary-General, who can serve a limit of two four-year terms.

    5.WMO promote meteorologically and linked research and training programmes

    6.WMO provide support to plan atmosphere, climate and water arrangements at worldwide and public levels.
