The full form of PWD is Public Works Department. it is also known as the central public work department(CPWD). It is a department of the central government of India under the ministry of urban development which deals in the construction and maintenance of buildings, roads, bridges, flyovers, stadiums, auditoriums, etc. It is responsible for the supply of safe drinking water and the maintenance of water pipes in each area.
PWD established in 1854 and headquartered in New Delhi. Director General (DG) also Principal Technical Advisor of Government of India lead Public Works Department, the division and subdivision are managed by Special DGs and Additional DGs and section od each state capital is managed by chief engineers.
PWD work categories
PWD consists of three major sections:
1.Electrical and Mechanical(E&M)
2.Buildings and Roads(B&R)
3.Horticulture
Functions of PWD
1.Plan, construction, and maintenance of central government offices.
2.Supply of safe drinking water and maintenance of water pipes.
3.PWD is responsible for the construction and maintenance of central police organizations like CRPF, CISF, BSF, and ITBP.
4. Construction, maintenance, and up-gradation of the national highway, village roads, district roads.
5.Responsible for defense and security-related work (border fencing, floodlighting, and Indo China Border Road Works) given by the government of India.
6. provide consultancy services to public undertaking and other autonomous organizations for civil engineering projects.
7. Construction and maintenance of flyovers and bridges.
