The full form of TRAI is the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. It is a statutory body established under the Government of India under section 3 of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Act, 1997 to regulate the telecommunication sector of India. It was founded on 20 February 1997 and headquartered in New Delhi. Ram Sewak Sharma is the current chairman of TRAI. The main aim of TRAI is to create and promote conditions for the growth of telecommunications in India to empower the nation to have a main job in the rising worldwide data society. It is responsible for protecting the interest of the telecom service provider and consumer.
According to the 2000 Amendment Act TRAI functions are divided into four categories related to various issues it can make recommendations, regulatory and administrative functions, fixing tariffs, and rates for telecom services.
Functions of TRAI
1. It conducts a survey at regular intervals to monitor the service of the telecom service providers to ensure that they are working best interest of the consumer.
2. Develop and monitor standards for telecom service.
3. Supervise the revenue share of telecom service providers.
4.Responsible for the issue related to licensing.
5. Dispute resolution
6.Consumer protection
7. Making affordable traffics and rates.
