The full form of SDM is Sub Divisional Magistrate. Each district is divided into subdivisions also called tehsil, SDM headed district sub-division. SDM has all administrative power in his division.
Sub-divisional magistrate play executive and managerial roles under Criminal Procedure Code 1973.
SDM is a junior most post of Indian administrative services, it is an entry-level post offered to IAS officer, sometime PCS officer served this post with relevant experience.
SDM supervise Executive Magistrate (EM)of his subdivision. and reports directly to the District Magistrate of the district.
Responsibilities of SDM
Some general responsibilities of SDM:
Responsible to conduct enquires into custodial deaths such as Jails, Police lock-up, etc.
Responsible to conduct enquires in case of unnatural death of women within 7 years of marriage.
Responsible to implement and coordinate disaster management plans in case of natural disasters, technological disasters, and man-made disasters.
