A cell in G1 of interphase has 12 chromosomes. How many chromatids will be found per cell during metaphase II of meiosis?
-
- 6
- 12
- 18
- 24
Correct Option: B
Meiosis is a two part cell division process in organism that sexually reproduces which results in gametes with one half the number of chromosomes of the parent cell. Chromosomal replication does not occur between meiosis I and meiosis II; meiosis I proceeds directly to meiosis II without going through interphase. The second part of
the meiosis i.e. meiosis II resembles mitosis more than meiosis I. Chromosomal number which have already been reduced to haploid (n) by the end of meiosis I, remains unchanged after this division. In meiosis II, the phases are again analogous to mitosis: prophase II, metaphase II, anaphase II and telophase II. Meiosis begins with two haploid (n=2) cell and end with 4 haploid (n=2) cells.
