The Merrut 1857 uprising was described by Dr. Surendra Nath Sen "Like summer gale revolt of Meerut was unprecedented and short -lived". In 1956, the Indian government commissioned him to write a history of the Indian popular uprising of 1857 - 59; the work, entitled Eighteen Fifty-seven, was published in 1957.
