Lord Dalhousie had drafted the Hindu Widows Remarriage Act. It was mainly due to the efforts of Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar (1820 - 91), the principle of Sanskrit college, Calcutta that the Hindu Widows' Remarriage Act, 1856, which legalized marriage of widows and declared issues from such marriages as legitimate, was passed by the government.
