Raja Ram Mohan Roy was the founder of the renowned Presidency College of Calcutta. Initially established as the Mahapathshala wing of Hindu College, it was renamed Presidency College, i.e. the college of the Bengal Presidency, in 1855. He is also regarded as the "Father of the Bengal Renaissance. The "superstitious practices" to which Rammohan Roy objected included Sati, caste rigidity, polygamy and child marriages.
